Cheese museum

As early as the 9th century, Irish Benedictine monks staying in an Abbey in the Munster Valley started drafting the recipe for our now world-famous cheese.

La Maison du Fromage in Munster showcases this cheese superbly on an 8-hectare site, and pays tribute to Munster cheese and the valley’s pastoral traditions. In addition to discovering how the cheese is made, you can taste fresh Munster, visit the barn to see the local Vosges cattle, watch films and browse exhibitions on mountain agriculture, the Vosges cattle, and the rich heritage and know-how of local farmers. A cheese-making cooperative, collaboratively managed by local farmers, processes over one million litres of milk on site to produce butter and cheeses such as Munster, Tomme and Bargkass. Finally, La Maison du Fromage marks the departure point of the well-known cheese-tasting trail, which leads visitors to mountain farms and big inns, through charming country roads that wind their way between wooded areas and grasslands. An attraction not to be missed!
